  • Over this last weekend I finally sat down and reviewed my recent purchases which have been 70% dividend-paying Canadian large-cap stocks.  Simply put, only about 20 of the 30 stocks on my Buy list made the cut so far.  I put in buy orders for the day and if the price strikes then I become the proud owner of a few lots.  Some of my recent buys are: CM-T, HSE-T and MFC-T.

  • While I think the access to information is wonderful and can level the playing field, I do think the investing world has become much more complicated with the widespread adoption of the internet for ‘real-time’ information. In days past, when the medium of the grapevine was newspapers and conversation, news and emotion had a tendency to snowball and become exaggerated with each transition. As a consequence, once the news reached the retail or institutional investor it was perceived as either very, very good or very, very bad.

  • I have been through the highs and lows of the markets since the late 1990’s and with each major gyration I gain personal insight.  Just as I feel it is an important job of parents to help their children identify, appreciate and focus on their inherent strengths, I also feel that investors must work within the realm of their personal strengths and beware of their personal challenges.  Ultimately, happiness & contribution matters not money!

    ]]>     http://www.assetology.com/investor-know-thyself.html/feed     Out of HOD http://www.assetology.com/out-of-hod.html http://www.assetology.com/out-of-hod.html#comments Tue, 28 Oct 2008 23:19:35 +0000 Assetologist http://www.assetology.com/out-of-hod.html I finally sold the last of my Horizon’s Beta-Pro Oil hedge - HOD as traded on the TSX.Bought on April 25th for $10.75 then in big on June 6th for $7.55.  Profits taken between October 10th and 27th.The immediate future for black gold is unclear but as the long-term direction seems pretty clear to me, I have moved the money into oil/energy companies which are currently selling at nice valuations.  I recognize that I will need to hold these for quite some time but there are some nice dividends to keep me happy.  Now I pray for an oil spike ;)As an aside, despite the news headlines the rapid rise in oil prices earlier this year clearly was NOT based on supply & demand  fundamentals rather it was most certainly leveraged speculation.The world just doesn’t change like that! Good Luck

  • So what’s right now?
  •  Great question but all I know is what’s wrong!
  • It’s wrong to run and pull your money from the markets because this will surely end up not only costing you money but your ability to tolerate risk will be damaged.  If you truly cannot tolerate risk than you really should not be investing in stocks or even bonds.  Look, even some money market funds have been compromised.  Don’t forget here are many alternatives to stocks and bonds - collectibles, businesses, domain names, real estate……. the list goes on.  The problem is that most of these other choices will not provide the financial returns that consistent equity market investments will, at least over the long term.  The one exception that comes to mind would be investment in one’s own personal growth and education.  This can provide huge dividends and open doors previously closed.

  • The classic Timmy’s for those who like their coffee… rich and caloric.  So what does this have to do with investments and assets?
  • Part of my ‘ivulture‘ strategy has been to pick the stocks I always wanted to own out of the rubbish heap when they hit a bargain basement price.  Fundamentals valuations are always useful but may actually be an achille’s tendon when picking bargains.  For many of these businesses, their fundamental numbers are changing rapidly and may not even really be known.  I am looking for companies that make money and but may have been hit hard where it counts with the recent turmoil.  
  • I aim to achieve a double on my stock investments within 4 years all the while collecting at least 5% dividends - a worthy goal but is it possible?
  • By carefully selection I think it is possible but the steady dividend component may be at the greatest risk.
