We are inundated with the need to make many decisions each day, week, month and year. Sometimes the weight of these demands can be overwhelming and we may find ourselves becoming very reactive and random with our choices. Unless we have an organized approach the results will be less than optimal.
So, how do we make the best decisions which can shape our future?
My approach is simple and replicable in a variety of circumstances. Not only that, I can feel positive about my decisions even when the consequences are not.
My Core Values provide the foundation for my decisions. I spent some time many years ago creating a list of my core values and importantly, prioritized them based on their intrinsic importance to me. Some common core values for example include (in no order): Family, Friends, Health and Vitality, Financial Security, Spiritual Connection, Giving, Character…. the list of possibilities is huge and personal. The fact is though that by spending some alone time working out your personal list of Core Values you will have a solid foundation upon which to rest even the most gut-wrenching decisions. This approach has been vital in my own life and has resulted in some seemingly spontaneous decisions which have proven to optimize my life and the lives of my family. ‘Success by Change’ generally results when decisions are made guided by your core values.
I implore you, take the time and start your own list of Core Values. Core being the key - what really matters to you? We all get one lap around the block, at the end what will matter?
