As you know, we live in a nice city on the west coast of North America and as in most temperate areas we have a transient and homeless population. These people can generally survive here because of the mild climate. I have noticed two very different money-making approaches: Active and Passive.
The Beggars hang around high traffic areas, usually outside popular stores or on certain street corners. These people tend to hold out a cup, hat or hand for money. Some can be fairly aggressive and even follow their marks persistently. Most though are quite passive and non-obtrusive. I usually feel a twinge of guild as I pass by but I never give any change. We have seen them take their change and go buy drugs or alcohol. Many of these people seeking passive income are physically or mentally incapable of pursuing active work but I would rather donate money and time to the organizations in the trenches that provide shelter, food and care for these less fortunate human beings.
Binners on the other hand are not looking for handouts, these are the industrious members of the homeless society. They tend to be loners but occasionally travel in pairs. As we live in a downtown neighborhood, we often see them emerging from large garbage bins or pushing their heavily-laden shopping carts down the street. In general they are quite avoidant while working. These individuals seek Active Income and know how best to optimize their strategies. On recycling day we see them out very early moving down the streets taking cans, bottles from the recycling bins. Smart. Rather than digging around in the bottom of dirty bins they find treasure troves outside of many houses. I see them taking our recycling and am happy because I know each and every can or bottle will certainly make it’s way to be recycle. Nothing of value is wasted.
What is the point of this description?
Simply to point out two very different work styles. Generally, I am all about Passive Income but many accolades to those who are productive members of our society. We can all contribute and hard work is a virtue unto itself. That said, I still feel that if we are fortunate enough to have all of our needs met, we should feel some obligation to help the less fortunate no matter what we believe to be the root cause of their situation. It’s all about having a positive attitude and believing that a multitude of small efforts can lead to large positive effects.
