We have been giving our children a weekly allowance for many years and followed the practice set out by J. D. Rockefeller Jr. As with my own children, his children were expected to Save 10% and Give 10% to a meaningful cause. For a number of years my children have selected a recipient for their donations, usually around Christmas. We match their gift dollar-for-dollar.

I have noticed that they are much more aware of the unmet needs of others not only around Christmas but throughout the year. Our ability to help in small ways has become a common dinner time topic of conversation. The children occasionally face a dilemma when multiple competing causes are being considered. I find it fascinating to follow their logic as they make these important decisions. Although they often receive letters and thank you cards for their gifts, many times they do not and the only source of thanks is within themselves.

In this huge world it is important to feel we can each make a difference however small. Many small benevolent actions can create a massive positive and contagious effect.

We have followed suit on a larger scale as a family but have plenty of opportunity as yet untapped. One of my goals is to set up a small Family Foundation and continue the legacy of giving.
